DEGREE PROGRAMME IN HEALTH ADMINISTRATION SCIENCE


DEPARTMENT OF NURSING SCIENCE AND HEALTH ADMINISTRATION

By virtue of the new statute on health science degrees issued 794/2004 the Bachelor's (180 credits) and Master's degrees (120 credits) in health science are available.

The major subjects in the Department of Nursing Science and Health Administration are

4. clinical laboratory science
5. The study programme for health science teachers


The minor subject alternatives are nursing science, clinical nursing science, health administration science, radiography, and clinical laboratory science.

1. General descriptions

Qualification awarded: Bachelor of Health Sciences, Master of Health Sciences
Admission requirements: Prerequisite to study at department of Nursing and health administration is health care degree, polytechnic degree or secondary school graduate
Educational and professional goals
The goals for the lower academic degree (Bachelor of Health Sciences):
The education must give to the student:
1) The basic knowledge of the field of Health Sciences and the capacity to follow the development of the field
2) Capability for scientific thinking and scientific working methods
3) Qualifications for higher academic degree and continuous learning
4) Personal capacity for using the knowledge in work
5) Sufficient communication and language skills

The goals for the higher academic degree ( Master of Health Sciences )
The education must give to the student:
1) Good knowledge of the overall of the major studies and basics of the minor studies
2) Capability of applying scientific information and methods
3) Capability to act as a professional and developer of one's own subject
4) Capability for scientific post-graduate education
5) Good communication and language skills

The goal of the degree programme of health administration science is to educate experts for research, planning and management in health care.The graduate students majoring the health care science can place themselves on public, private and third sector e.g. social- and health manager, public service unit manager, charge nurse, department head, project manager, development manager, enterpriser, teacher, planner, coordinator and researcher. The students can choose minor subjects to suit their career orientation.
Course structure diagram with ECTS credits (60 per year): The Bachelor's degree consists of general studies (orientation and language studies, 52 credits), basic studies (25 cr) and intermediate studies (30 cr) in health administration science, studies in minor subject(s) and optional studies (63 cr), and a Bachelor's thesis (10 cr). General studies are same in each programme/major subject. The Master's degree consists of advanced studies in health administration science (38 cr), studies in minor subject(s) and optional studies (60 cr), and a pro gradu thesis (30 cr). Some studies on Bachelor's level (parts of general studies, basic studies, and optional studies) are compensated for by previous studies, so that the Bachelor's degree can be completed in 1,5-2 years (full-time study).


The students enrolled in the degree programme of health administration science, may choose any of the minor subjects available.

1) If the student accomplish in minor the nursing science and there the research methods -course, student has to take the course Health care administration at the present 2.0.
2) If the student accomplish in minor the nursing science and there the research methods I, student has to take the course The theory and practice of health administration 4.0.

Minor and optional subjects are at some other branch of science in University of Oulu or other universities completed basic, intermediate or advanced studies. To the bachelor´s degree the student must complete at least 63 credits minor and optional studies. To the Master´s degree the student must complete at least 52 credits minor and optional studies. To the both degrees it is recommend that there is a one 25 credits (minimum) study module. If the student has an earlier polytechnic degree from the health or social care, 30 credits of optional studies will be compensated to his/hers Bachelor´s degree.
