DEGREE PROGRAMME IN HEALTH MANAGEMENT SCIENCE

CURRICULUM 2016-2017

The Bachelor’s degree (BHSc) and Master’s degree (MHSc) in Health Sciences in the University of Oulu are based on the Government Decree on University Degrees 794/2004. The degree programme in Health Management Sciences leads first to the degree of Bachelor of Health Sciences (180 ECTS cr) and further to the degree of Master of Health Sciences (120 ECTS cr). The studies are multidisciplinary in the degree programme of Bachelor of Health Sciences (first-cycle university degree), so that the curriculum of the three different degree programs (Nursing Sciences, Health Management Sciences, Teacher Education Programme in Health Sciences) is identical to all undergraduate health science students irrespective of chosen specialization. Students selected to the degree programme in Health Management Sciences have health management science as their major subject. The students do their Bachelor thesis and learning tasks in their field of specialization. The degree of Master of Health Sciences (second-cycle university degree) is differentiated according to the chosen specialization. After completing the Master's degree, the student is eligible for applying for further academic education (doctoral degree).

Those who have completed the Degree Programme in Health Management Science, qualify for various positions in social welfare and public health care. These include such positions in planning, development, research, teaching and management on both national and international level.

In the beginning of the studies, the student is linked with a tutor who acts as a small group supervisor and as a personal teacher for the student. All students draft their own personal study plan (e-HOPS). The implementation of teaching is in accordance with the decision by University of Oulu (KN 17.9.2014) regarding four teaching periods during the time period 29.8.2016 -12.5.2017. Additionally there is a period for examinations and for catching up 15.5. - 26.5.2017. Furthermore, it is possible to take a part of the courses during the summer term. A separate announcement is made of the courses offered during the summer term by the end of February.

All students of University of Oulu may become exchange students if they so wish and to take a part of their courses (e.g. free choice studies, practice) in an institution of higher education abroad. The time period for studies as an exchange student is 3-12 months and a student may become an exchange student when they have finished one year of studies at University of Oulu. The student and the coordinator for international affairs will make a decision together regarding the time period for studies as an exchange student and for an individual study plan. In case the student is doing the practice unit of their studies as an exchange student, the student first agrees about this with the teacher responsible for the practice unit and with the person responsible for international affairs. After this the student is in contact with the student centre in order to apply for the place of practice and in order to apply for possible funding.

During their studies the students are asked to give feedback for each study unit, for each academic year, in connection with small group supervision and with a nationwide Bachelor’s Degree feedback form. The feedback is processed in the planning committee for education in the Research Unit of Nursing Science and Health Management and it is used for developing the quality of study units, curriculum and education.
