CURRICULA OF HEALTH SCIENCES (BHSc) 2014-2015

(NURSING SCIENCE, HEALTH MANAGEMENT SCIENCE, TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAMME IN HEALTH SCIENCES)


The Bachelor’s degree (BHSc) and Master’s degree (MHSc) in Health Sciences in the University of Oulu are based on the Government Decree on University Degrees 794/2004. The degree programmes in Nursing Science, in Health Management Science, and Teacher Education Programme in Health Sciences lead first to the degree of Bachelor of Health Sciences (BHSc), comprising 180 ECTS Credits, and further to the degree of Master of Health Sciences (MHSc), comprising 120 ECTS Credits. The studies are multidisciplinary in the degree programme of Bachelor of Health Sciences, so that the curricula of the three different degree programs (Nursing Sciences, Health Management Sciences, Teacher Education Programme in Health Sciences) is identical to all undergraduate health science students irrespective of chosen specialization. The postgraduate studies for the degree of Master of Health Sciences (MHSc) are differentiated according to the chosen specialization. After completing the Master's degree, the student is eligible for applying for further academic education (licentiate degree, doctoral degree).

Those who have completed the Degree Programmes in Nursing Science, in Health Management Science, and Teacher Education in Health Sciences, qualify for various positions in social welfare and public health care. These provide the qualifications for clinical nursing, and for working as an expert in research, development, teaching and leadership in social and health care on a national and international level.

 

Academic Clearance

Studies in the multidisciplinary degree programme in health sciences are applicable only to students admitted to the programme through the entrance examination. Subject studies or minor studies of the multidisciplinary degree programme are not available as minor studies for students coming from other degree programmes in 2014–2015.

 

UNDERGRADUATE MULTIDISCIPLINARY DEGREE PROGRAMME 180 ECTS credits

The undergraduate education in health sciences includes a wide range of scientific, theoretical and methodology studies, and studies grounded in expertise of professional working communities.

Learning Objectives for the Degree Programme Bachelor of Health Sciences

The learning objectives of the Degree Programme correspond to the aims of the Finnish National Framework for Qualifications and other Learning.

Having obtained the degree of Bachelor of Health Sciences the students are able:

to explain the foundations of health science in the changing and multicultural environment of health care and to observe and interpret the development of health care and health sciences;

to use scientific and critical thinking, technology and scientific methods and approaches creatively in obtaining, producing and evaluating relevant research data;

to apply gained knowledge critically and creatively in professional situations and problem solving;

to work as an expert in one’s own field in multidisciplinary and multicultural settings of social welfare and health care services in a cooperative manner;

to make independent decisions and act independently according to the ethical principles of health sciences;

to have competence in communicating in one’s mother tongue, in one additional official language spoken in Finland and in at least one foreign language;

to further qualify for a postgraduate degree and continued learning.

The Institute of Health Sciences in the University of Oulu deals with areas of individual and communal interest in health from the perspectives of health care, education and management. Having completed this area of competence the student knows the foundations and foundational operational principles of Finnish health care and Finnish health care education. The student is able to define objects of research in nursing science and health management science in evidence based operation of health care and the student gains preliminary knowledge in theory development in health sciences.

The students may adjust their studies according to their personal objectives by the choice of minor subjects and optional studies. These include national or international studies in varies fields of science according to the Personal Study Plan (PSP) of each student.

The minor subject studies for the undergraduate degree in Bachelor of Health Sciences need to include a study unit of at least 25 ECTS cr (Basic Studies in Education 25 ECTS cr are compulsory for those in the Teacher Education Programme in Health Sciences). Studies completed at other universities (preliminary or subject studies) may be credited for the study unit at least 25 ECTS cr in the minor subject.

Optional Studies 57 ECTS cr:

Optional studies are preliminary studies, subject studies or specialized studies completed at the Institute of Health Sciences, at the University of Oulu and at other national/international institutions or universities. Student may start minor subject and optional studies for their later degree in Master of Health Sciences during their undergraduate studies according to their Personal Study Plan (PSP).

Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning (RPL) follows the main principles as defined by the University of Oulu. According to regulations of the University of Oulu, paragraph  Accreditation of studies taken elsewhere and recognition of prior learning (§ 27), the principles concerning accrediting studies taken in other Finnish and foreign universities and other educational institutions are stipulated in the curricula or other regulations, unless they have not been stipulated elsewhere. The decision for accreditation of studies by individual students is made by the head of the degree programme.

Studies to be credited from an Institute of Nursing, University of Applied Science or Master’s degree in health care from a University of Applied Sciences, other universities, including Open University studies arranged with other universities requires separate application procedure. Application to have credits accepted has to be submitted to the teacher responsible for the study unit and further dealt with by the chairperson of the Degree Programme. The decisions on credit transfer for Language and Communication Studies are made through the Language Centre.

The Preliminary Studies, the courses in 351201P/ 351202P Foundations of Health Sciences 25 ECTS cr are accepted based on prior applicable qualification in health care from a University of Applied Sciences, other universities or Open University. 

The Preliminary Studies in Foundations of Health Sciences 23 ECTS cr accepted based on prior qualification in health care from vocational upper secondary qualification and in health care from vocational college diploma.

Methodological Studies

Credits may be applied for previous university studies.

Optional Studies

The optional studies for the degree Bachelor of Health Sciences 57 ECTS cr are accepted based on prior qualification in health care from a University of Applied Sciences, and 32 ECTS cr are accepted based on prior qualification from vocational upper secondary qualification and from health care vocational college diploma.

Learning Objectives for the Degree Programme Master of Health Sciences

Having attained the degree of Master of Health Sciences in addition to Bachelor of Health Sciences, students are able:

to acquire and evaluate current information critically and use it independently and innovatively from the viewpoint of multiprofessional management and in relation to advanced studies;

to conduct scientific research with scientific research methods and engage in postgraduate studies in health administration science;

to participate in research, expert tasks, management and development in health care;

to communicate orally and in writing in a clear and analytical manner;

to evaluate the activities and knowledge of the people acting in the operating environment and to increase their knowledge and preparedness.
