Degree Programme in Nursing Science
Study Programme for Health Science Teachers
1. General descriptions
The main subject of the Degree programme in Nursing Science and Study Programme for Health Science Teachers is nursing science. Compulsory minor subject of the Study Programme for Health Science Teachers is didactics in nursing science.
The education is based on the Covernment Decree on University Degrees ( 794/2004).
Qualification awarded: Bachelor of Health Sciences (180 ECTS), Master of Health Sciences (120 ECTS)
Access to further studies:
After completing the Master's degree, the student is
eligible for applying for postgradual education (licentiate degree,
doctoral degree).
Admission requirements:
Prerequisite to study in a degree programme in Nursing
Science is a previous degree of health care
(post-secondary/polytechnic level), i.e. Bachelor of Health Care or
equivalent.
Educational and professional goals:
The goals for the lower academic degree (Bachelor of Health
Sciences):
The education must give to the student:
1) The basic knowledge of the field of Health Sciences and the
capacity to follow the development of the field
2) Capability for scientific thinking and scientific working
methods
3) Qualifications for higher academic degree and continuous
learning
4) Personal capacity for using the knowledge in work
5) Sufficient communication and language skills
The goals for the higher academic degree (Master of Health
Sciences):
The education must give to the student:
1) Good knowledge of the overall of the major studies and basics of
the minor studies
2) Capability of applying scientific information and methods
3) Capability to act as a professional and developer of one's own
subject
4) Capability for scientific post-graduate education
5) Good communication and language skills

The knowledge goals for the degrees correspond to the national framework for qualifications and other learning
After having obtained the degree of Bachelor of Health Sciences students
After having completed the degree of Master of Health Sciences students
Students enrolled in the Degree Programme in Nursing Science major in nursing science and may choose any of the minor subjects available. Students enrolled in the Study Programme for Health Science Teachers major in nursing science. Compulsory minor subject of the Study Programme for Health Science Teachers is didactics in nursing science. The goal of the education is to educate experts for planning, development, instruction and management in social and health care.
2. Course structure with ECTS credits
The Bachelor's degree consists of general studies (orientation and language studies, 60 cr), basic studies (25 cr) and intermediate studies (35 cr) in nursing science, and studies in minor subject(s) and optional studies (60 cr).
The Master's degree consists of advanced studies in nursing science (60 cr), and studies in minor subject(s) and optional studies (60 cr).
Some studies on Bachelor's level (parts of general studies, basic studies, and optional studies) are compensated for by previous studies, so that the Bachelor's degree can be completed in 1,5-2 years (full-time study).

3. Optional studies and minor subject studies
Optional studies and minor subject studies at the University of Oulu or other universities
Students may select optional courses from different disciplines at the University of Oulu or other universities according to their personal study plan.
Students may select courses from sources such as the health science university network TerveysNet or the national JOOPAS web service maintained by universities according to instructions. Students can also choose courses from the selection of the UniPID (Finnish University Partnership for International Development) network .

Didactics in nursing science
Learning outcomes:
The student will attain expertise in teaching and development
tasks in the field of health and social care. After finishing the
studies the student can
1) work independently as teacher and pedagogue,
2) evaluate the development of one's own field of studies and
adjust scientific information and methods to the work,
3) use research to plan the work and education of one's field.
Admission requirements:
The right to study in the teacher training in health sciences (minor subject: didactics in nursing science) can be received in an entrance examination.

Transfer of credit
Courses marked with asterisks (*, **, ***): major subject students do not have to make a separate application to have credit accepted if they have submitted a copy of the degree diploma in question to the Faculty. The only exception are language and communication studies, for which decisions on credit transfer are made by the Language Centre.
