Osaamistavoitteet 

- Student can name the principal working components of a modern synchrotron radiation facility and can
explain briefly their function.
- Student understands the basic properties of synchrotron radiation and how it possibly differs from
radiation generated with other means.
- Student can explain the basic mechanisms behind scattering, spectroscopic and imaging techniques on a
qualitative level used at synchrotrons.
- Student can name an application of a specific synchrotron radiation technique.

 
Sisältö 

The course consists of two parts. In the first and somewhat shorter part of the course a brief introduction
to synchrotron light sources, light matter interaction, synchrotron radiation generation and its properties is
given. After this background information, several experimental techniques benefitting from synchrotron
radiation are presented. The techniques are loosely classified as scattering, spectroscopic or imaging
methods. Application examples of the presented techniques are provided ranging for example from
biomedicine, archeology and petrochemical industry to materials science, biology and computer
technology.

Students/researchers in various fields of science (e.g. physics, chemistry, biomedicine, biology, materials
science) interested in learning about what possibilities synchrotron radiation has to offer.

None, although a good grasp of basic physics helps.

The course is based on the following book which is used as the only reading material:
An introduction to synchrotron radiation physics: Techniques and applications, Philip Willmott, John
Wiley & Sons, (2011).

Two written intermediate examinations or one final examination.

 
Arviointiasteikko 

Numerical grading scale 0 - 5, where 0 = fail.
