Learning outcomes 

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to identify and compare the political, economic, and cultural aspects of different cultures, as well as to perceive the main development trends of the pre-modern era. Students will be able to view Finland’s integration to the Western European cultural circle.

 
Contents 

The course will present the main developments from the High Cultures to the French Revolution. Finnish history will be introduced as a part of the development of Western Europe

It is also possible to complete the course as a book exam. Students can choose one of the following literature compilations:

2. Study of the Middle Ages, (choose both books):

Jacques Le Goff, Medieval Civilization 400–1500 (1988 or newer).

Kari Tarkiainen, Ruotsin Itämaa: Esihistoriasta Kustaa Vaasaan (2010).

3. Study of the Early Modern Time (choose both books):

Merry E. Wiesner-Hanks, Early Modern Europe, 1450–1789, 2nd edition (2013).

Nils Erik Villstrand, Valtakunnanosa: suurvalta ja valtakunnan hajoaminen 1560–1812 (2012).
