Learning outcomes  After this course the student is familiar with diseases of internal medicine as well as diagnostics and treatment of these diseases. The student understands the connection between internal medicine and other medical specialities. The student learns independent problem solving and critical thinking and also to cooperate with healthcare professionals. 
Contents  Endocrinology and metabolic diseases, cardiology, ECG, kidney diseases, haematology, rheumatology, gastroenterology and emergencies in internal medicine. 
Learning activities and teaching methods 

1. Lectures 81 h

2. Patient history and physical examination. Student writes accurate anamnesis and status of six patients that he/she has examined carefully.

3. Guided medical procedures and examinations. Carried out in small group classes and in ward practice.

4. Small group classes 24 h. Student participates in small group classes in various wards.  Each class lasts 2 hours. Attendance is compulsory. 

5. Practice in outpatient clinic 4 h. Attendance is compulsory. 

6. Practice in the Department of Emergency (Internal Medicine) 3 x 6 h. Attendance is compulsory. 

7. Ward practice 80 h. Organised in two one week sessions. Attendance is compulsory.  Part of practice is carried out in the hospitals of Northern Finland.

8. Seminars 53 h. Problem-oriented discussions about wider thematic entities. Attendance is compulsory.  
Recommended optional programme components  Student must have completed preclinical studies and propedeutics of internal medicine.

Assessment methods and criteria  Attendance in compulsory teaching.
Exams of endocrinology and metabolic diseases, cardiology and ECG, kidney diseases, haematology, rheumatology and gastroenterology.

 

 
Grading  Grading scale in exams is 1-5 and the lowest accepted points are 20/40.
